PM Thanks Japan for Warm Welcome Extended to Lt. Gen. Hun Manet

KRATIE: Prime Minister Hun Sen presided over the inauguration ceremony of seven bridges in Kratie province on Wednesday morning. During the ceremony, he delivered a speech where he thanked the Government of Japan for welcoming his son, Lieutenant General Hun Manet, on his official visit to Japan from 14th to 17th February.

During his speech, Prime Minister Hun Sen remarked that several senior leaders of Japan had met with his son, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Army, Lt. Gen. Hun Manet. Some of the senior leaders Lt. Gen. Hun Manet has met with thus far include the Commander of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, the Japanese Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister of Japan.

The Prime Minister was quoted saying, "Thank you for the gesture of communication with the Cambodian Army Commander, who is my son.” He added that Lt. Gen Hun Manet has now met with three Japanese Prime Ministers over the years – Yukio Hatoyama in 2010, Shinzo Abe in 2018 and Fumio Kishida in 2022.

Lt. Gen. Hun Manet is leading a Cambodian Army delegation on a four-day official visit to Japan from 14-17 February 2022, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Japanese Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) in Cambodia, the first overseas operation of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces within the framework of the United Nations.

This is the Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army’s first official visit abroad since the situation of Covid-19 has improved in Cambodia. This visit adds to the strong established ties between the Cambodian and Japanese armies, particularly after the last high-profile visit to Cambodia from the former commander of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, Yuasa Goro, in 2020.
